Chinese teachers in England: QTS and routes into teaching

Mainland China is not currently on the country list for direct overseas QTS applications. The more realistic routes are usually assessment-only QTS, or teaching under the four-year rule while completing QTS. Work permission and immigration remain separate.

The order, from China to the classroom

  1. After confirming that the current direct-overseas QTS country list does not cover you, compare assessment-only QTS, English teacher training and the four-year rule.
  2. Approach an approved assessment-only provider for a preliminary check of the Chinese degree, teaching experience and work in two schools.
  3. Complete the GCSE-equivalence evidence, teaching portfolio and classroom observations, then obtain QTS through assessment.
  4. Search for a school able to sponsor the relevant visa; if hired under the four-year rule first, agree a timetable for completing QTS.
  5. With an eligible role, apply for the relevant visa such as Skilled Worker.
  6. Once employed, comply with school, QTS and teacher-regulation requirements.

How the qualification counts

  • The direct overseas QTS service is limited to the countries and regions on the official list; mainland China is not currently included.
  • Assessment-only QTS normally requires a bachelor's degree, at least two years of teaching experience, and experience in two or more schools.
  • Applicants also need English and mathematics equivalent to GCSE standard, plus science for primary QTS. The provider assesses teaching evidence and observes classroom practice.

Registration requirements

  • Ask an assessment-only provider whether it accepts applicants overseas, can assess you in your current school, and will accept the proposed evidence of Chinese qualification equivalence.
  • Prepare degree records, teaching qualification and employment evidence, proof of work in two schools, lesson planning and pupil-assessment evidence.
  • Complete the provider's teaching assessment and classroom observations; overseas assessment can add significant cost and logistical requirements.
  • If employed first under the four-year rule, plan for QTS at the same time because the rule is not a permanent QTS exemption.

Published costs

  • Assessment-only QTS usually costs about GBP 1,500–4,000
  • Assessment outside the UK can cost substantially more
  • Qualification-comparison statements, translations, police documents, visa and relocation costs are additional

Getting to England

QTS, a job offer and immigration status are separate. Most Chinese teachers without existing UK work rights still need a role with an eligible sponsor and must meet the job and salary rules for a Skilled Worker visa.

The binding limitThe four-year rule is not a visa and does not apply to every school or circumstance. Maintained schools generally require QTS; academies and private schools may have legal flexibility, but employers often still prefer QTS.
