Australia keeps migration cap steady, with skilled places still central

Australia · · Visa news for Chinese passport holders

Australia will keep its 2026–27 permanent Migration Program at 185,000 places, with an approximate 70:30 split between skilled and family migration. The total is unchanged from the previous year, but the composition shifts further toward applicants already in Australia.

What changed

The 185,000 figure is the planning level for the permanent Migration Program, not a cap covering every temporary visa, student visa, or humanitarian place. Skilled migration remains dominant and includes employer-sponsored, state and territory nominated, independent skilled, and other economic pathways. The family stream supports partners, parents, and other eligible relatives. The government says a stronger onshore focus should provide more timely permanent pathways for migrants already living and working in Australia while limiting additional net overseas migration.

What this means for Chinese passport holders

For people already holding Australian study, graduate, or work visas, this is a relatively stable signal with more emphasis on onshore transition to permanent residence. Offshore skilled applicants remain eligible, but need stronger occupation-list alignment, skills assessment, English, points, state nomination, or employer support. With no increase in places, competition outside priority occupations is unlikely to ease.

Confirm the skills-assessment authority, English evidence, and points validity before comparing subclasses 189, 190, 491, and employer-sponsored routes. People already in Australia should plan state nomination or employer transition before temporary status expires. Offshore applicants should not treat an expression of interest as an invitation guarantee and should monitor state occupation lists and allocations.
