Applications for the new Short-term Graduate Work Visa open on 16 November 2026, giving some graduates who do not qualify for the full Post Study Work Visa a shorter window to seek and undertake work. Some Level 7 graduate diploma holders can enter the post-study route where they also hold a bachelor's degree. Updated Skilled Migrant Category rules take effect on 24 August 2026 and clarify genuine-employment and related residence requirements.
This is a targeted opening for international graduates, not an automatic open work visa for every course. Qualification level, an existing bachelor's degree, field of study, and job alignment still matter. Skilled applicants and employers will need clearer evidence that employment is genuine, ongoing, and fits the relevant residence pathway.
Before enrolling, verify the NZQCF level, Appendix 13, and post-study eligibility rather than relying only on school marketing. Prepare transcripts, degree evidence, and employment records, and plan around the separate August and November commencement dates.
