From 16 November 2026, New Zealand will add a Short-term Graduate Work Visa and expand post-study work options for some graduates. The key point is not that every graduate receives a longer visa, but that different qualifications will lead to different work routes.
The change addresses the lack of a general post-study work route for some Level 5–7 graduates. A Level 7 Graduate Diploma holder who already has a bachelor's degree can receive the normal Post Study Work Visa for up to one year. Other eligible Level 5–7 graduates outside the existing routes can apply for the new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa. There is no major change for bachelor's or postgraduate graduates already covered by the existing route.
This is a positive expansion because it gives some graduates a new option to remain and work in New Zealand, but it is not an unconditional opening. Applicants still need to check the qualification level, whether their course qualifies, the application timing, and the resulting visa duration.
