A study-based route requiring admission to an eligible education provider.
Route overview
Typical timeline / duration: Permit validity tied to study programme and conditions; extensions possible if eligible.
Important notes
Must be enrolled at a designated learning institution; get letter of acceptance; provincial or territorial attestation letter usually required; CAQ required for Quebec; apply for study permit before travel in most cases.
Must prove enough money for tuition, living expenses for applicant/family and return transport; medical exam/police certificate may be required. Outside Quebec the living-cost figure has been CAD 22,895 for a single applicant since 1 September 2025, rising to CAD 28,502 for two people, CAD 35,040 for three, CAD 42,543 for four and CAD 6,170 for each further family member, on top of tuition and travel. IRCC reviews the amount annually.
Can work only if study permit conditions allow; rules depend on programme/institution and should be separately checked.
