A remote-income route for applicants working for overseas employers, clients, or businesses.
Route overview
Typical timeline / duration: Up to 6 months at a time on visitor status.
Important notes
A digital nomad working remotely for an employer outside Canada may stay on visitor status, usually for up to six months at a time. The person must meet the nationality-based visitor visa or eTA requirement, show a genuine temporary visit, keep the main business and income outside Canada, and not enter the Canadian labour market.
There is no separate digital-nomad income threshold: the visitor application should show enough funds for the stay, a stable foreign job or business, and reasons to leave Canada at the end of the authorised visit.
No Canadian work permit required for foreign-employer remote work; must not enter Canadian labour market without proper authorisation.
Preparation checklist
Prepare route evidence: Digital nomads may work remotely for an employer or business outside Canada while visiting, but should plan to stay for less than six months, avoid entering the Canadian labour market, keep the main business and source of income outside Canada, and obtain the visitor visa or eTA required by their passport and travel method.
Confirm the financial evidence: No dedicated digital-nomad income threshold found in official IRCC material; visitor funds test applies generally.
