Remote Work / Digital Nomad temporary-stay visa or residency visa
Portugal has temporary-stay and residence options for remote professional work for entities abroad. Commonly called D8, the remote-work residence category is labelled D9 on VFS China's checklist; D8 there means accompanying family.
Typical timeline / duration: Temporary stay: under one year. Residence visa: normally four months/two entries, followed by a separate residence-permit application.

From 11 September 2026, Article 52(2), as amended by Law 62/2026, requires a transport document ensuring return for the skilled job-seeker visa. This legal requirement does not establish an open filing service; confirm the accepted evidence once the responsible post accepts applications.

D2 entrepreneur / independent activity residence visa
A residence route for people establishing a business or carrying out independent professional activity in Portugal.

For independent activity, provide articles of association, a proposal or service contract, plus any required regulated-profession declaration.
For entrepreneurship, describe the investment's nature, value and duration and prove investment already made or funds available in Portugal for the identified project.
Provide general national-visa documents and subsistence evidence; apply through the consulate and complete the residence-permit stage after arrival.
Investment residence through a currently eligible ARI activity, with category-specific thresholds, investment evidence and continued compliance.
Typical timeline / duration: Renewable ARI residence; the minimum five-year investment-maintenance period is counted from the residence grant, not the permit's processing time.
AIMA lists standard options of at least ten jobs; €500,000 research; €250,000 eligible cultural support; €500,000 qualifying non-real-estate funds; or €500,000 company capital combined with specified jobs. Apply the relevant category sheet and any legally applicable territorial reduction.
For the fund option, the Portuguese-law vehicle must have at least five years' maturity at investment and put at least 60% of its investments into companies based in Portugal.
For the company-capital option, satisfy the specified permanent-job creation or retention conditions for at least three years. A transfer of €500,000 alone does not satisfy the employment condition.
Provide the category's bank/investment evidence, passport, lawful-entry/stay evidence, health cover, recent authenticated criminal record with Portuguese translation, tax identifiers and tax/social-security clearance. Undertake to maintain the qualifying investment for the minimum five-year period.
Study in Portugal through the China D4 visa process, followed by the residence application for the relevant education category.
