All four destinations can offer a stable school career to a teacher from Mainland China, but their strengths differ. On a comparable top public-school or collective-agreement benchmark, Australia pays the most and Ontario ranks second. For residence, New Zealand and Canada offer the strongest pathways, Australia also has a points-tested option without employer sponsorship, while England normally depends on employer sponsorship. Ontario is used as the Canadian salary and teacher-licensing benchmark.
Monthly pay uses a comparable top public-school or collective-agreement salary, rounded into CNY: NSW public-school salaries for Australia, the national trained-teacher base scale for New Zealand, the outside-London range including the announced September 2026 uplift for England, and the top Ontario board grid for Canada. Residence-route accessibility is rated out of five stars and measures the immigration path to long-term residence, not ease of finding a job; teacher licensing and recruitment remain separate. Hours are total reported work during a normal term week, not classroom teaching time — only about 20 hours of it is spent in front of a class, with the rest going to planning, marking, meetings and admin, a good deal of it in the evening and at weekends. Australia and New Zealand use OECD TALIS 2024 and England the DfE Teacher Workload Survey; Ontario's estimate comes from an older provincial workload study, so it is less current than the other three. Non-teaching weeks are a school-calendar estimate, not freely bookable corporate leave, and preparation, training or school duties may still occur.
* Ontario benchmark
On the same top-grid basis, Australia still ranks first for pay, but Ontario ranks second ahead of England, so Canada is not the low-pay option. The residence ranking is different: eligible Tier 1 teachers can apply for New Zealand residence from offshore; Canada's education-category Express Entry offers a route that does not depend on a job offer or employer sponsorship; Australian secondary teachers can pursue an invitation under subclass 189; and England normally requires employer sponsorship. All four treat teacher licensing separately from immigration permission, and an immigration invitation does not itself secure a teaching job.
If maximum pay is the priority, investigate Australia first. If a direct occupation-linked residence route matters most, start with New Zealand. Anyone seeking permanent residence without employer sponsorship should also calculate their eligibility and competitiveness for Canada's Express Entry and Australia's subclass 189. England is more workable for teachers who already have UK work rights or can secure a sponsoring school and accept long term-time hours. Canada still requires a provincial teaching licence, and the salary benchmark here is Ontario only.
Treat teacher licensing and immigration eligibility as two separate checks. First establish whether the destination recognises your degree, teacher training, age range and subject. Then test the relevant immigration route: New Zealand Straight to Residence, Canada's education-category Express Entry, Australia's subclass 189 invitation, or England's Skilled Worker sponsorship. Teacher certification does not itself grant work permission, and immigration eligibility does not guarantee a teaching job.
