Reform UK gains local power; immigration risk rises

UK · · Visa news for Chinese passport holders

Reform UK made major gains in the 2026 local elections and took control of more English councils, showing that anti-immigration pressure had moved from national polling into real electoral power. Councils cannot rewrite visa or settlement rules themselves, but the result increases pressure on the government to take a harder line on both legal and irregular migration.

What changed

Local authorities mainly control housing, social services, planning, and some community support. They do not control work, study, or family visas, asylum decisions, settlement, or citizenship. Reform winning councils therefore does not cancel any immigration route. The wider result, however, weakened Labour and the Conservatives and reinforced the national political message that migration must fall. For legal migrants, the practical risk lies in later central-government measures: higher salary and English thresholds, tighter sponsor scrutiny, fewer temporary places, or longer waits for settlement.

What this means for Chinese passport holders

In the short term, the legal conditions for existing visa holders and applicants did not change because of the elections. The medium-term effect is greater policy uncertainty, especially around Skilled Worker, Health and Care, student-to-work, dependant, and settlement routes. Reform-led councils may also make tighter local budget choices affecting migrant support, housing services, and community funding.

Do not treat a local-election result as if visa rules have already changed. Apply under the current GOV.UK rules and preserve salary, employment, English, address, and continuous-residence evidence early. If approaching renewal or settlement eligibility, do not delay solely because of political speculation, but keep contingency funds for higher fees or thresholds.
