A study-based route requiring admission to an eligible education provider.
Route overview
Long-stay D visa / temporary residence permit for study
Typical timeline / duration: D visa up to long-stay limits; residence permit or EU mobility may apply for longer studies.
Important notes
For a D visa submit a passport issued within 10 years and valid three months beyond the visa, form, 35×45 mm photo, study evidence, family/biographical data, transport booking and fee.
Medical insurance must cover the visa period; submit income evidence for the preceding three months. Study funds are €880 per month. Foreign public documents need legalisation/apostille and an Estonian or English translation.
Work is allowed under student residence rules in some cases but should be stated with exact current conditions.
Clarify D visa versus residence permit based on course duration and nationality.
Preparation checklist
Prepare route evidence: acceptance by an Estonian educational institution, a passport/travel document, photo, application, study-purpose evidence, and in-person application for the long-stay D visa or study residence permit where required. A D visa normally covers up to 12 months; longer study requires the residence route.
Confirm the financial evidence: Travel medical insurance and proof of financial means required for D visa; study residence documentation should be confirmed through PBGB/institution.
