The current retired-person checklist published by South Africa's diplomatic service states a minimum pension or annuity of R37,000 per month, or an equivalent net-worth basis; permanent-residence applications use the category-specific Department of Home Affairs requirements.
Retired-person temporary residence and financially independent permanent residence are separate outcomes. The first is a temporary stay route; the second is a permanent-residence category with its own financial evidence.
Neither route is an open work permit; paid work requires a separate work-authorised status.
