Residence permit for full-time higher education

Important notes
Final admission must be for full-time, on-site higher education, not distance learning. At a university, 30 credits per semester counts as full-time; required tuition must be paid before applying.
For applications in 2026, the normal maintenance amount is SEK 10,656 per month for the permit period, separate from tuition. Qualifying free food or housing from the institution or an international-exchange organisation can reduce it; accompanying family normally adds SEK 4,440/month for a partner and SEK 2,664/month per child.
Personal savings must be accessible in the applicant's account; for applicants under 18, guardians' accounts may also qualify. Frozen funds, credit, shares and investment funds do not qualify as personal bank assets. Relatives are not accepted as sponsors, but their gifts can count after transfer into the applicant's accessible account.
Permitted funding sources can be combined, with the required records. An initial bank statement must be issued no more than four months before the requested permit start; an offer of future employment alone does not establish employment income.
For a course shorter than one year, comprehensive insurance for the whole stay must cover medical and hospital treatment, emergency dental care and medical repatriation. Submit passport, admission and funding documents with originals and certified Swedish/English translations where necessary.
For bachelor's/master's permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, ordinary work is limited to 15 hours weekly. Exceptions include June–August, curricular placements and specified work at the institution; exceeding permitted hours can affect renewal or lead to withdrawal.
After completing at least two semesters, the guidance also permits extra work during the remaining permit period if no new below-doctoral study permit is being sought. This is not automatic permission to switch to a work-residence route.
For university permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, renewal progress normally requires 37.5 credits in year one and 45 credits in each later full-time year. Earlier grants retain their earlier progress rules; illness requires supporting evidence.
From 1 October 2026, accompanying family staying for at most one year need comprehensive health insurance. Student-family maintenance requirements are unchanged and already apply to initial applications and renewals; legal-guardianship evidence may also be required.
Residence must normally be granted before travel. Renewal opens at most four months before expiry and must be filed before expiry; admission, funds, progress and work records remain relevant.
